Rupert Murdoch’s multinational media behemoth News Corp. is under intense scrutiny for a hacking scandal perpetrated by one of its newspaper properties. The weekly tabloid, News of the World hacked into the cellphone voicemail of a 13-year-old missing girl. The incident is almost ten years old as the girl went missing in 2002 and her body found about 6 months later. Why is this all coming back now? The situation in Quartzsite, Arizona is one that should be front page national news. Apparently there have been allegations of political corruption in the town for years. Any place where the city council fires the lawfully elected mayor (Ed Foster), declares a state of emergency, arrests citizens for exercising their rights and places the controversial sheriff (Jeff Gilbert) in charge of everything should be top on the news agenda. The ever cool-headed Obama apparently felt the effects of the summer heat as he responded to the stall tactics of Eric Cantor and the Republicans on the debt ceiling talks. Obama and the Democrats have been willing to compromise on their biggest issues, mainly discretionary spending and programs like Medicare and Social Security, but the Republicans refuse to budge on anything to resolve the debt ceiling issue. According to statistics, Kentucky was ranked number seven in the U.S. in terms of obesity rates, with over 30 percent of adults being obese. Childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes are also on the rise in the state. Yum Brands, the parent company of fast food favorites KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, is lobbying the state of Kentucky to allow food stamp recipients to buy their products.
