Pepper Spray happy NYPD Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna Is punished…not really

You hooligans get off my lawn!

So it seems MSNBC’s “The Last Word” host Lawrence O’donnell may have a future as a psychic. Weeks ago in a commentary about Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna’s pepper spray assault of corralled and surrounded unarmed young females during an Occupy Wall Street demonstration, O’donnel said that basically he would most likely get away with it. Good news for MSNBC you have a multi-talented host on the payroll (how’d he do that?). Bad news for the public at large and justice, Anthony Bologna, even though the public wanted him to lose his $154,300 a year job and or be arrested, was barely reprimanded.

The NYPD found that Bologna violated departmental guidelines and docked him 10 vacation days, or the equivalent amount of pay, police sources said.

So Officer Bologna not only gets away with his pepper spray assault on women but he gets to choose his own punishment it seems. He was docked 10 days of vacation days or the equivalent amount of pay. Well now isn’t that special. That so called punishment is laughable at best. I’m not sure how making an already unstable officer in need of anger management work more days on the job is justice or in the best interest of whichever civilian happens to cross his path on the days he was supposed to be perfecting his Al Bundy impersonation.

Bologna is a ranking police officer, who should serve as an example to those under him, and should be held to a much higher standard. Police anyway should be held more accountable than the general public due to the nature of their position. Police are in supposed positions of trust and authority armed with special training and lethal weapons. Peter Parker’s wise old Uncle Ben said it best, “With great power, comes great responsibility.” This cop was not showing respect worthy or responsible behavior. Not only that, this wasn’t foreign territory for him. Bologna had been investigated before for civil rights violations at the 2004 Republican National Convention protests. As a repeat offender, a slap on the wrist doesn’t cover it. This is why there is such distrust towards police in some neighborhoods where behavior like this rarely even sees the light of day. Being a police officer isn’t just a job like clocking in to work the register while wearing a hairnet and shouldn’t be trivialized as such in cases where misconduct is evident. You damn sure aren’t getting any donations for the policeman’s ball this year. Ok I don’t give anyway but that’s not the point.

Bologna’s union reps said he was “disappointed.”

“His actions prevented further injury and escalation of tumultuous conduct,” said Roy Richter of the NYPD Captains Endowment Association.

Really? That is the best you could come up with? We all saw the video, people all over the world saw the video. From different angles. I have been down at Occupy Wall Street several times and two things are clear. The “white shirts” are very much on power trips and there is no such conduct going on down there that could be classified as tumultuous. Not even. The constant. Drumming. Torturous at times perhaps but not tumultuous. Take five fellas or better yet take 10 of those vacation days that Bologna won’t be needing.

The suit is right, so called non-lethal weapons like pepper spray and tazers are supposed to be used as an alternative. Any sort of force, weather non-lethal or not, should only be used when verbal training has failed and there is evidence that the situation is about to escalate. Instead, if the huge cache of YouTube videos are any indication, some officers are using it as a default to the interpersonal communication training they are supposed to be utilizing.
In a way though Bologna got instant Karmic pay back for his actions. The video of him displaying his cavalier attitude toward pepper spray restraint helped launch Occupy Wall Street into the national spotlight. So if no one else says it to you Tony, I appreciate you. Thank you.
